Root Canals

Equipment

Damage and infection in a tooth is the most common source for pain in the mouth. When there is too much decay a root canal usually needs to be done. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning of the canals.

This process begins with the dentist drilling a small access hole into the biting surface of the tooth. This hole allows access to the roots and pulp chambers. The deceased and dead pulp tissue is removed from the tooth. Once the pulp, along with the nerves contained in it, is removed the tooth will no longer feel pain. The canals are then disinfected and the hole in the tooth is filled.

After the procedure some pain and discomfort may occur. Tenderness and soreness are usually present as well. Most discomfort can be managed with pain meds.

Following a root canal, crowning the treated tooth is encouraged. The tooth becomes brittle and can be easily broken. This can lead to the tooth needing to be extracted and an implant placed.
